The impact of physical activity on insomnia
Previous analyses have shown that physical activity can have beneficial effects on insomnia. However, the relationships between different levels of physical activity and insomnia symptoms in the general population were not yet clear.
Study results
The study found that moderate physical activity was associated with a 7% reduced risk of insomnia. In contrast, high physical activity did not show a significant link to the risk of insomnia. Additionally, work-related physical activity was associated with a 21% increased risk.
Importance of intensity and type of activity
These results highlight the importance of considering both the intensity and the domain of physical activity for sleep health. This means that not only the amount of physical activity matters, but also the type of activity practiced.
What does this mean for you?
For individuals affected by sleep disorders, these results suggest that engaging in moderate physical activity may be beneficial in reducing the risk of insomnia. However, it is also important to consider the type of activity, particularly if it is work-related.
