Study Objective
This study aimed to understand how obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) might be related to the circadian rhythm, which regulates our sleep and wake cycles.
Methodology
Participants aged 35 to 74 years were clinically evaluated and completed sleep questionnaires. They also underwent a home sleep test and wore an activity monitor for a week.
Main Results
The study found no significant associations between OSA and circadian rhythm-related variables. However, more detailed analyses showed that certain characteristics, such as a higher apnea-hypopnea index, were linked to decreased daytime activity, especially in women and older individuals.
Implications for Patients
These results suggest that the relationship between sleep apnea and circadian rhythm depends on individual factors. For patients affected by sleep disorders, this underscores the importance of a personalized approach to manage potential disruptions in circadian rhythm.
