Insomnia and Its Consequences
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulties in falling asleep or staying asleep, leading to functional distress. This study revealed that insomnia may be a risk factor for the development of chronic pain.
Study Results
The study followed 2,174 adults without a history of insomnia, depression, or pain. It showed that 10.8% of those who developed insomnia subsequently reported pain, compared to only 2.3% among those without insomnia.
Implications for Patients
These results suggest that treating insomnia could be beneficial in preventing or managing chronic pain. For individuals suffering from sleep disorders, it is therefore important to consider insomnia as a factor to be taken into account in pain management.
