A new questionnaire to assess sleep inertia in French

A French version of the Sleep Inertia Questionnaire (SIQ) has been validated to assess sleep inertia, a temporary state of impaired performance after waking. This assessment is particularly relevant for patients suffering from sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and hypersomnia disorders.

What is sleep inertia?

Sleep inertia is a temporary state that affects cognitive and motor performance just after waking. This can be particularly observed in individuals with sleep disorders.

The Sleep Inertia Questionnaire (SIQ)

The SIQ is a 22-item questionnaire that assesses different aspects of sleep inertia, including behavioral, physical, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. A French version has been developed and validated to better serve French-speaking patients.

Study results

The study involved 237 participants, the majority of whom suffered from obstructive sleep apnea. The French version of the SIQ showed excellent internal consistency and acceptable validity. SIQ scores were correlated with levels of fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep quality.

Importance for patients

The validation of this questionnaire in French allows healthcare professionals to more accurately assess sleep inertia in French-speaking patients. This could improve the understanding and management of sleep disorders, but it is important to note that this questionnaire is an assessment tool and does not replace a medical diagnosis.
