Comparison of Treatments for Sleep Apnea
Clinicians often have to choose between CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and a mandibular advancement device (MAD) to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A recent study evaluated the effectiveness of a fully digital MAD compared to CPAP.
Study Results
Twenty adults suffering from OSA participated in this study. The results show that both treatments significantly reduced the oxygen desaturation index and the snoring score compared to no treatment. However, no significant difference was observed between the MAD and CPAP on several health indicators.
What This Means for Patients
The digital MAD has proven effective in reducing symptoms of sleep apnea, with no significant clinical difference compared to CPAP. This offers patients a viable therapeutic alternative, especially for those who cannot tolerate CPAP.
