Remote monitoring could improve adherence to CPAP treatment

A study examined whether remote monitoring of patients can improve adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment in individuals suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. The results show differences, but they are not significant after adjustment. Further research is needed.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder where breathing temporarily stops during sleep due to an obstruction of the airways.

The importance of adherence to CPAP treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment is the standard therapy for OSA. Its effectiveness depends on adherence, which is the regularity with which the patient uses the device.

The results of the remote monitoring study

The study compared a remote monitoring program (RPM) with a standard of care program (SOC) in adults with OSA. The results show that adherence to CPAP treatment was 80.6% in the RPM group and 73.5% in the SOC group, but this difference is not significant.

The RPM group also had fewer nights with high mask leaks and higher satisfaction regarding the support received, but these results were not confirmed after adjustment for multiple comparisons.
