Restless Legs Syndrome Often Overlooked in Parkinson's Patients

A recent study reveals that nearly 25% of patients with Parkinson's disease suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome, often undiagnosed. This syndrome is linked to poor sleep quality and an increase in dopaminergic treatments, highlighting the importance of systematic screening.

What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder that causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by discomfort. This syndrome can disrupt sleep and affect the quality of life of those who suffer from it.

A Frequently Missed Diagnosis

In a study conducted among patients with Parkinson's disease, it was found that 23.2% of them met the criteria for RLS. Worryingly, 95.8% of these cases had not been previously diagnosed, with an average diagnostic delay of nearly 6 years.

Links to Sleep Quality and Treatments

The results show that the presence of RLS is strongly associated with poor sleep quality and increased use of dopaminergic medications. This underscores the need for better awareness and systematic screening for RLS during consultations for Parkinson's disease.
