Microglia and Their Role in Sleep
Microglia are immune cells present in the brain. In the context of Alzheimer’s disease, these cells can become overly active, leading to inflammation that disrupts deep and restorative sleep.
A Surprising Discovery
Researchers found that even by leaving amyloid plaques, which are protein deposits associated with Alzheimer’s disease, in the brain, it was possible to restore more than two hours of sleep per day by temporarily reducing the activity of microglia.
Implications for Patients
This study highlights a new potential mechanism for sleep loss in people with Alzheimer’s. While further research is needed to determine how this could translate into treatments, it paves the way for new avenues to improve sleep for patients.
