Insomnia, a Common Symptom of Depression
Insomnia is a frequent symptom in individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). It is associated with reduced quality of life and less favorable outcomes in the treatment of depression.
Study Results
This study was conducted with 1250 participants, the majority of whom were women, and revealed that 60% of them suffered from moderate to severe insomnia. Despite the common use of antidepressant medications and sleep treatments, insomnia symptoms persisted, significantly impacting their daily lives.
Consequences on Daily Life
Participants reported negative consequences on their daily functioning, such as irritability and decreased productivity. About two-thirds of them indicated that sleep disturbances had a major impact on their lives.
A Need for Integrated Treatments
The results highlight the importance of adopting treatment strategies that address both depressive symptoms and those of insomnia. It is crucial to prioritize the management of insomnia symptoms within the treatment of MDD, as they can contribute to relapses and treatment resistance.
