What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder that can lead to chronic health problems and affect quality of life.

The limitations of current diagnostic methods

Polysomnography (PSG) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing OSA, but it is costly and requires a lot of time and resources.

The importance of audio signals

This systematic review analyzed 122 studies, of which 15 were selected. Some showed that the use of audio signals, such as those from a smartphone, could allow for the detection of OSA with good accuracy.

What this means for patients

If this research continues, it could become possible to assess the risk of OSA in a more accessible and less invasive manner. This could facilitate early screening and improve patient management.
